September Honeymoon
Planning a wedding is a huge effort for most couples. But one of the many great rewards comes from taking that honeymoon trip. These too take a little planning, but of a type that is incredible fun. No one size fits all, of course. The ‘best’ honeymoon is the one that’s best for each individual couple. And by that measure, the options are endless. Consider the following honeymoon ideas…
Some will prefer a romantic cruise to the Caribbean. Lying out on sunny beaches in winter helps get your heart racing while you relax. Love is a paradox, so why not? But if cruising is your style, there are a lot more choices, including Tahiti, Mexico or even Scandinavia.
Picture yourself sailing around the Greek Isles or the Mediterranean. Set off on a voyage to the south of France while you explore each other. Stop over in Lisbon or Barcelona. Enjoy the ocean breeze off Hawaii, or ship off to Alaska and enjoy the surprisingly warm summers as you look for grizzly bears.

If you and your new spouse are animal lovers, or connoisseurs of the great outdoors, it doesn’t get any greater than Africa. Honeymoon safari packages abound. Sail down the Nile. Take a trek across the veldt. Explore the mountain jungles and see live gorillas outside a zoo for the first time.
Africa is an incredibly diverse continent that offers far more than crocodiles and monkeys. See the elephants of Tanzania and enjoy the most spectacular sunsets on the planet. Stay at Ngorongoro Crater Lodge on the edge of the Serengeti in Tanzania. Or, try the Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge in Kruger National Park, South Africa.
Maybe you’re planning a September wedding but still want to include skiing as part of your honeymoon. No problem. Anything south of the equator will find you in the middle of the winter season. Head to Thredbo, Jindabyne, Smiggen Holes or any dozen other popular ski resorts in the land down under, Australia.

Honeymoon in September
The sun setting over the Gulf of Mexico, as shown from Honeymoon Island off of Tampa, Florida, September 2, 2006. “San Andreas Fault” by Natalie Merchant. ***Update: This used to be to “San Andreas Fault,” but YouTube gestapo disabled the music and made me replace it with something un-copyrighted. It’s much better with the Natalie Merchant song, so pretend that’s what’s playing.

Is it better to stay in a condo rental on the beach, or a chain hotel? Thanks!
PS Our budget per night is $200-$300. Also, do we need a car in either or both places?
It really depends on what you want your honeymoon memories to be. There’s a lot to see and do in Hawaii, but you may just want to relax and spend time strolling amidst the palms or walking on the beaches watching the sunset. But, if you actually want to go surfing or snorkeling or see the waterfalls, whales, volcanoes and other sights then you want to choose your accommodations accordingly. Here’s a great site that has a lot of suggestions for romantic activities – http://www.hawaii.com/visit/maui/romance/honeymoons/index.php – they also have some honeymoon-specific hotel recommendations and travel specials.
Once you’ve decided what you’re going to do, then think about how you want to travel. If you stay in a condo, it’s intimate and cozy. You have more space and room to spend inside. You can save money by making your own breakfast in the morning if you’re staying in a condo.
If you’re in a hotel room, you’ll have a smaller space and it won’t be quite as intimate. But the nice thing is you won’t have to worry about cleaning up after yourself or making the bed in the morning.
Both hotels and condos can be very fun in Hawaii. In Honolulu, I’d recommend the Sheraton Princess or the Ilikai hotel (http://www.ilikaihotel.com/rooms/index.html).
A great value is the Castle Waikiki condo rentals that are located on the shore of the beach. They have a lot of deals, and you should be able to upgrade to one of the best rooms and still stay within your price range. (see their site here: http://www.castleresorts.com/Home/accommodations/waikiki-shore)
A really lovely retreat is the J.W. Marriott Ihilani resort, it’s just outside of Honolulu – very secluded and their luau is amazing. They are a bit pricey, but they do have specials that include meals and spa treatments, so consider that even though it may be a bit outside of your budget range. (see the deals here: http://www.q9web.com/specials/HNLJW/#43)
If you do decide to choose a chain hotel, sign up for their rewards program. They’re usually free and you’re sure to get a ton of points for your trip.
Whether or not you need a car really depends on how long you’re staying and what you plan to do. Check out the different sights and romantic activities that you might like to participate in, see where they’re located and use that information to determine if you need a rental car or not.
In Honolulu, there’s a lot of public transit and you can probably do just fine without renting a car, but in Maui you might want to consider it.
Also, don’t forget that Honolulu is in Oahu, which is a different island than Maui. You’ll definitely need to arrange travel between the two islands.
Good luck and have fun on your honeymoon in Hawaii!

My ideal honeymoon would be to Monaco, with the Monte-Carlo casino, the beach, the mountains, and exciting museums/gardens. But that is WAAY out of my budget.
Soo, I’m looking for, hopefully, an equally exciting location on the east coast of the US. I live in Virginia and I’m not interested in a honeymoon in this state. Plane travel is fine, and I’d want a really upscale hotel and spa.
